I am so happy to finally share my favorite table that I’ve contributed to this year. It was very much a team styling effort with the photographer Nancy Neil pulling amazing platters and glassware from Botanik and then I added in a mix of props from my collection and Vintage Vignettes.

Shot at a private estate with its own citrus grove, I had fun running around and harvesting citrus straight from the property. I wired citrus branches to chunky wood candle holders and made “citrus trees” to add height to the table. And the amazing foodie charcuterie spread by Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama was out of this world. Post shoot, this table became lunch for the crew (roughing it I know).

Here are some tips from Ayda Robana for the perfect spread…

Charcuterie Menu Ideas:

  • Nuts: pistachios, and marcona almonds
  • Toppings: French butter, flur de sel, homemade jalipaino jelly, local wildflower honey, French radishes, cornichons, and caselvtrano green olives
  • Cheeses: hombolt fog, pecorino, petite basque, gouta, chèvre, double cream bri, stout cheddar
  • Charcuterie: prochutto di Parma, bresaola, sopressata, and chicken liver pâté
  • Dried fruits: dried white peaches, dried apple slices
  • Fresh fruits: grapes, figs if in season
  • Fresh baguette sliced thinly on the diagonal, flatbread crackers, bread sticks, rainforest crisps

Woodland Forest Table

Also in the current issue of Flutter is this woodland tabletop I styled with the work of the amazing floral designer Francoise Weeks as part of Florabundance‘s design days. Shot in the incredible fern garden at Lotusland, I knew the second I say this enormous stag fern that this would be the perfect for Francoise‘s woodland inspired arrangements. I styled the table with simple taupe linen from Porch, driftwood benches from Elan Event Rentals, and teak chargers also from Elan. Valerie Rice of Eat Drink Garden made a simple pea salad, crostini, and cumquat drink to compliment the table design. In lieu of a traditional printed menu, Rebekah Miles painted on oversized tropical leaves. I love how this table turned out. And you can check out the full spread in Flutter Mag issue 6.

This was the kind of shoot where everything fell together perfectly in ways that couldn’t have been planned.  A big thank you to the amazing Nancy Neil for the insane photos and the to die for food by Paper Palate.

The signature apple drink  by Paper Palate was a serious hit.

The table itself had a beautiful galvanized finish and is available for rent from Vintage Vignettes. Each place setting consisted of  gorgeous plates from Anthropologie, a hand painted menu by Rebekah Miles, glassware from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, vintage flatware, and napkins by Rachel Craven.

I used pre-made loose weave ribbon around candles and tucked in millet, wheat, scabiosa, and astrania instead of doing a traditional flower arrangement. Flowers can be purchased at Fabulous Florals.

Local Cambria Estate Wines paired perfectly with the menu.

I found these short tumblers from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond and I knew they’d be perfect for our baked apple dessert.

Spring Party IdeasPhotos by Nancy Neil

I was so happy when Nancy Neil invited to participate in this spring entertaining story with Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama. We shot at a private estate in Goleta and setup this table on their private dock (you know to go with their private lake). I used a low wood bowl and placed the centerpiece at the end, so the star of the table, the FOOD would stand out.

A menu of seasonal and local ingredients made up for a delicious feast (post-shoot this was dinner for the crew, it was rough but I got through it). My favorite? The squid ink pasta with eggs over easy…

For the rest of the table, Nancy pulled gorgeous plates & glassware from Botanik in Summerland and used God’s eye linen from Heather Taylor Home.

Real Wedding: Greek Garden Elegance

Evie & Nate were seriously a dream couple to work with; super nice, easy going, with amazing taste to boot, and the booked my girl Kirsten for the photos. The inspiration for the wedding design, was Evie’s Greek heritage. When we first spoke, she said she wanted it to feel like her grandmother’s garden in Greece. So we talked about using fresh herbs like bay and lavender, of course olive branches, and then mixing in fluffy garden roses.

In Evie’s bouquet I used a mix of Patience garden roses, bay leaves, lavender, olive branch, and queen anne’s lace and wrapped it up, with a strip of torn linen.

In keeping with the herb theme, I made petite boutonnières of lavender and rosemary and wrapped them with copper velvet ribbon. The bridesmaids carried simple dried lavender poseys finished with a tidy bow.

The ceremony was held at St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church and decor was kept simple with olive garlands attached to the church pews.

After the ceremony, guests made there way to the rooftop of the Canary. I designed a “potting bench” seating card table using Town & Country’s potting bench bar. At the center of the table, guests’ names and seating assignments were spelled out on wood plant markers and tucked into moss. To finish the vignette, I used a collection of vintage watering cans, potted lavender, and stacks of rustic garden containers.

On the tables I used a mix of stone, and iron, garden containers and filled them with annabelle hydranga, Patience and Caramel Antique garden roses, bay and olive leaves, sweet peas, and dahlias. A soft green linen was draped over the tables and La Tavola’s cut lace linen layered over. A mix of gold and silver mercury glass candle holders added a hint of metallic glow.

Flutter Workshop: The Art of Arrangements

I was super honored to teach Flutter magazine’s first ever workshop, The Art of Arrangements with some of the most stunning seasonal fall flowers from Fabulous Florals (which PS sells to everyday floral enthusiasts not just florists). Joel Serrato came out and shot the fun on FILM and, of course, a little champs was involved. Le Petite Chef made a spread of bite-sized lady like treats including pumpkin whoopie pies (yum). I demostrated a basic taping technique, explained how to use foliage to create the initial shape of an arrangement, how to build and place flowers for maximum effect.  Then everyone got to work playing with flowers. I pulled a variety of china, flatware and glassware from Town & Country Event Rentals and then each student got to design their own little tabletop setup. For my setup, I went with a more modern vibe and used velvet midori ribbon as an accent. It was so much fun to meet so many awesome ladies and play with flowers! And stay tuned, I’ll be teaching another intimate workshop soon…

One Bouquet Recipe Three Ways by Holly Chapple

Also in this current issue of Flutter is a bouquet story I styled with Holly Chapple‘s beautiful bouquets that she taught as part of Florabundance Design Days. She created one floral recipe and arranged the flowers in 3 different styles, a loose cascade, a traditional dome shape, and a loose organic shape. I styled the model with a taupe dress from Lovely Bridal LA and jewelry from Sophia Kaman. This was shot on location at Lotusland by my girl Lacie Hansen. Enjoy!

Real Wedding: Vintage England, II


My sister’s ceremony was held at the Richmond-upon-Thames registry office. A small room in a historic house, the ceremony had just 40 guests in attendance. The service is very simple, bridesmaids and groomsmen sit with guests. The bride and groom also sit at the registrar’s desk. During the ceremony the license is signed  by the best man and maid of honor. After that, the couple and all the guests stand as the wording before the kiss is said. And afterwards, the couple gets showered with confetti as they leave the office. I love, love this tradition!

Post-ceremony we took portraits, some more traditional, some less so (we had to bring some westside style to this shindig).

Tracy & Mark continued with photos while we headed to the reception. I’m absolutely in love with their wedding portrait by the Thames by Kirsten of Beaux Arts. My mom had brought wellies from the US and they just happened to match her wedding dress perfectly. Mark, of course, wore a traditional morning suit.

My sister, like me, opted to go with a short wedding dress. She paired it with a classic birdcage veil and some Badgley Mischka heels. You can see more of the wedding right here on Snippet & Ink!

Real Wedding: Vintage England

I can’t believe its been almost a year since my sister Tracy got married… I traveled to England two weeks prior to the big day to help her with all the last minute details and to gather all the decor for the wedding. My sister wanted something that felt appropriate to the reception space and we talked about a color palette of soft blues, bits of lavender, and cream. I threw out the ideal of Toile which is that perfect shade of blue/grey and definitely had that old world elegance. Once we had that piece decided on, I ordered fabric and had my linen vendor make a runner for the head table and napkins for all the guests.

I brought the menus, linens & napkins, and a suitcase full of floral supplies with me (TSA was a big fan I’m sure). Tracy and I bought containers ranging from old tea sets, to old trophies, to vintage biscuit tins from flea markets and antique stores. I sourced flowers from the London Flower Market (I used Alagar, who were easy to work with and delivered the flowers directly to my sister’s house) and I ordered  garden roses from David Austin.

For seating cards, we found a vintage letterpress drawer to tuck the cards into. My mom was kind enough to write them all out, since I elected her as having the prettiest hand writing. The menus are from Wedding Paper Divas. I accented them with Italian paper from Paper Source and a “R” seal for Ryan (the groom’s last name). I got the seal and the wax from Letter Seals. My sister made the majority of the seals which we dubbed “Ryan money” since they looked like copper pennies.

Of course, what would an English wedding be without many proper pints? My dad, up top making friends with the groom’s family, and myself, after finishing setup.

There was much laughter and love that night, the two families with extremely different backgrounds came together and crushed many a pint. Above, my sister with my dad, below Tracy and I with the two bridesmaids, Lisa, my sister’s BF, and our cousin Jocelyn sharing a moment right after toasts.

My sister’s first dance was adorable… She chose “At Last” by Etta James which was fitting. They met in Australia while both were back packing and working… Mark is from England (though ethnically Irish) and she was an American… After much world trotting back and forth and going through the immigration process to get into the UK, it was nice to simply celebrate their new lives together.

I was absolutely in love with the adorable cake my sister designed with Georgina’s Cakes. The bride and groom figurines are sitting on a rucksack with a map and book saying Australia in reference to how they met. It was so much fun to get to spend time hanging out with my sister and her husband and seeing how happy they are. Congrats you too!!!

Flower Chic: Vibrant Fall Centerpiece Idea

I love fall and winter flowers and for this centerpiece I was inspired by bold red anenomes with their black centers.

Coupled with fall maple leaves, bittersweet, black dahlias and chocolate cosmos, I love the rich saturated colors paired with the darker, moodier flowers.

To make this arrangement you will need:

Supplies:

-floral shears

-floral foam

-container, I used this one from Jamali Garden

Flowers:

1 bunch maple leaves

1 bunch black dahlias

3 strands of bittersweet

1 bunch chocolate cosmos

2 bunches orange dahlia

2 bunches red anenomes

1 bunch frizzy orange/red tulips

1 bunch black scabiosa

Begin by placing the bittersweet and maple leaves first to establish shape. Then add in your larger blooms at different heights. Remember to turn your centerpiece periodically so you end up with a good shape from every angle. Layer your smaller flowers into the arrangement and ta da! You have a beautiful fall centerpiece!
