I am so happy to finally share my favorite table that I’ve contributed to this year. It was very much a team styling effort with the photographer Nancy Neil pulling amazing platters and glassware from Botanik and then I added in a mix of props from my collection and Vintage Vignettes.

Shot at a private estate with its own citrus grove, I had fun running around and harvesting citrus straight from the property. I wired citrus branches to chunky wood candle holders and made “citrus trees” to add height to the table. And the amazing foodie charcuterie spread by Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama was out of this world. Post shoot, this table became lunch for the crew (roughing it I know).

Here are some tips from Ayda Robana for the perfect spread…

Charcuterie Menu Ideas:

  • Nuts: pistachios, and marcona almonds
  • Toppings: French butter, flur de sel, homemade jalipaino jelly, local wildflower honey, French radishes, cornichons, and caselvtrano green olives
  • Cheeses: hombolt fog, pecorino, petite basque, gouta, chèvre, double cream bri, stout cheddar
  • Charcuterie: prochutto di Parma, bresaola, sopressata, and chicken liver pâté
  • Dried fruits: dried white peaches, dried apple slices
  • Fresh fruits: grapes, figs if in season
  • Fresh baguette sliced thinly on the diagonal, flatbread crackers, bread sticks, rainforest crisps

Remember when I was scouting for the location for this shoot? This was the kind of shoot where everything fell together perfectly in ways that couldn’t have been planned.  A big thank you to the amazing Nancy Neil for the insane photos and the to die for food by Paper Palate.

The signature apple drink  by Paper Palate was a serious hit.

The Menu:

The table itself had a beautiful galvanized finish and is available for rent from Vintage Vignettes. Each place setting consisted of  gorgeous plates from Anthropologie, a hand painted menu by Rebekah Miles, glassware from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, vintage flatware, and napkins by Rachel Craven.

I used pre-made loose weave ribbon around candles and tucked in millet, wheat, scabiosa, and astrania instead of doing a traditional flower arrangement. Flowers can be purchased at Fabulous Florals.

Local Cambria Estate Wines paired perfectly with the menu.

I found these short tumblers from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond and I knew they’d be perfect for our baked apple dessert.

Spring Party IdeasPhotos by Nancy Neil

I was so happy when Nancy Neil invited to participate in this spring entertaining story with Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama. We shot at a private estate in Goleta and setup this table on their private dock (you know to go with their private lake). I used a low wood bowl and placed the centerpiece at the end, so the star of the table, the FOOD would stand out.

A menu of seasonal and local ingredients made up for a delicious feast (post-shoot this was dinner for the crew, it was rough but I got through it). My favorite? The squid ink pasta with eggs over easy…

For the rest of the table, Nancy pulled gorgeous plates & glassware from Botanik in Summerland and used God’s eye linen from Heather Taylor Home.

Entertaining: Nordic Inspired Brunch

I love me a good brunch situation and when Kim, the editor of Flutter Magazine, asked me to style a modern, Nordic, take on brunch I was wayyy on board. The amazing Ayda Robana made the most incredible spread with quick pickles (obsessed), buckwheat pancakes, frisee salad with poached eggs and pork belly (hello, yum) all paired with amazing artisanal hot chocolate by Jessica Foster Confections. Nancy Neil captured all the action perfectly and also hosted our little soiree at her amazing cabin. We shot this on my birthday and it was certainly the best way to spend it! I’m super excited to announce the latest Flutter Magazine is out online here and in PRINT out today (I will be getting my hands on a copy within the hour, check me on Instagram @kellyoshiro if you want a peek). I have two things in the magazine, a farm to table dinner shot in apple orchard (remember this backstage post?) which you can check out HERE. Shot by Nancy Neil with food by the Paper Palate (um, pumpkin tacos anyone?). Cambria Wine generously provided libations.

My second story was a cute little DIY for making dried confetti flower petals shot by Arna Bee. Kim the editor of Flutter, Joy of Joy de Vivre and I had fun playing confetti tossers… check it, HERE. I’ll be posting the full scope soon and THANK YOU to everyone who contributed.

Backstage: On Set with Flutter Magazine

Last week I showed you some of the prep that goes into a photo shoot and this week I’m giving you a peak into what’s involved on set… Tricia Fountaine was awesome enough to provide tables for the dinner (how cute is her prop warehouse?). Upstairs at Pierre Lafond loaned me some beautiful pieces for the table and Danielle from Paper Palette put them to good use holding her seriously delicious food. Cambria Winery generously provided libations and Danielle’s signature fall cocktail was outta this world. Don’t you love the resourcefulness that comes for shooting at a ranch, car/plating station anyone? And up top, the sun setting over the ranch.. that’s a wrap folks! Backstage: Prepping for Flutter Magazine Shoot

Today I’m in massive prep mode for a fall, textured themed, shoot for Flutter magazine’s PRINT (Yes, print!) addition. It’ll drop this October so keep an eye out. The amazing Nancy Neil will be shooting and we have a serious dream team happening. Here’s a little sneak peek to give you the flavor… We’re shooting at one of Santa Barbara’s many ranches, the site visit (where we scout the spot and figure what’s happening where) was more like a lovely nature walk. Up top, Kim, the editor of Flutter, and I, surveying the options.

Here’s a hint at some of the textures I’m gonna be playing with… Special thanks to Tricia Fountaine for lending us some bomb props.

So I know I said I wouldn’t post any more wedding stuff, but hey that’s my flowers on the COVER of C Weddings!!! Super stoked to have worked with long time photographer contributor here at SB Chic, Nancy Neil. Since this was suppose to be fall, even though we shot this in May, I tried to keep it seasonal with anemones, ranunculus, explosion grass, and umbrella fern for the bouquet, all generously provided by Florabundance.

This dress was my favorite, its Valentino and has the most insane beading on it. Also, it has pockets (all wedding dresses should have pockets for pete’s sake!). I want this dress so bad. Be sure to check out the 10 page editorial in the mag. Thanks to Nancy & the C Weddings team for having me! 

Entertaining: A Spring Dinner with a DIY Flower Garland

Today I’m featuring a tabletop that was recently published in Santa Barbara Magazine and Style Me Pretty Living. It was a collaboration with the always amazing Nancy Neil and super chef Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama.

We set a simple table; with a god’s eye patter runner from Heather Taylor Home and china and flatware from Botanik.

Simple salads, like the panzanella with Haricort Verts featured farm fresh ingredients (recipe for the salad is here).

Instead of traditional flower centerpiece, I opted to make a flower garlad to keep the vibe relaxed but still very pretty. To make the garland you will need:

2 bunches of bay (depends on length of table)

2 bunches clematis

1 bunch hot pink ranunuculus

1 bunch wax flower

Begin by simple laying the piece of bay leaves end to end. I created a zigzag effect here so you could see the pattern of the linen. Then I simply took the blooms of clematis, ranunuclus, and wax flower and tucked it into the bay. You can wire all these pieces together but its not necessary. And that’s pretty much it!
