Dinner in the Apple OrchardPhotos by Nancy Neil

Remember when I was scouting for the location for this shoot? This was the kind of shoot where everything fell together perfectly in ways that couldn’t have been planned.  A big thank you to the amazing Nancy Neil for the insane photos and the to die for food by Paper Palate.

The signature apple drink  by Paper Palate was a serious hit.

The table itself had a beautiful galvanized finish and is available for rent from Vintage Vignettes. Each place setting consisted of  gorgeous plates from Anthropologie, a hand painted menu by Rebekah Miles, glassware from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, vintage flatware, and napkins by Rachel Craven.

I used pre-made loose weave ribbon around candles and tucked in millet, wheat, scabiosa, and astrania instead of doing a traditional flower arrangement. Flowers can be purchased at Fabulous Florals.

Local Cambria Estate Wines paired perfectly with the menu.

I found these short tumblers from Upstairs at Pierre Lafond and I knew they’d be perfect for our baked apple dessert.

Editorial: Farmer’s Market TablePhotos by Mike Radford for Enjoy Events Co. Workshop

Back in March I spoke at Enjoy Event’s Co workshop about styling. I put together a farmer’s market inspired table, pulling pretty rainbow chard, artichoke, radiccio from Root’s Farm and plants from Ace Hardware. My goal was to make this table as green as possible (leftover decor = food, and the plants now live on my porch) and also easy to replicate. For containers, Found provided some of their insane collection of vintage trophies and I mixed in some galvanized aluminum pieces from one of my favorite local boutiques, Porch. And I finally got to use Casa de Perrin’s collection of heath china (how pretty are those plates). Each setting was also set with a little snack for guests of dried fruit and nuts. On the Rocks: Sparkling Hibiscus

If you know me, than you know how much I love a good champagne cocktail and this one with hibiscus infused vodka is no exception.

Make it:

1oz Hibiscus infused vodka

1oz Saffron infused gin

.5oz Vermouth Bianco

1.5oz Champagne

Combine, shake and strain all ingredients except for the champagne. Pour mixture in champagne glass and then top off with champagne.

One Bouquet Recipe Three Ways by Holly Chapple

Also in this current issue of Flutter is a bouquet story I styled with Holly Chapple‘s beautiful bouquets that she taught as part of Florabundance Design Days. She created one floral recipe and arranged the flowers in 3 different styles, a loose cascade, a traditional dome shape, and a loose organic shape. I styled the model with a taupe dress from Lovely Bridal LA and jewelry from Sophia Kaman. This was shot on location at Lotusland by my girl Lacie Hansen. Enjoy!

Flutter Magazine Issue 6

The newest issue of Flutter magazine is out and its seriously gorgeous. The cover shoot is our annual astrology bride editorial styled by Joy Proctor, photographed by KT Merry and hair and makeup by Luna Bella. DIY: A Hot Pink Gal-entine’s Day Arrangement

I asked Camille of Camilla Floral Design to create a chic arrangements that anyone could re-create for their Gal-entine’s festivities for Flutter’s blog. You can see the full post right here. From Camille:

“I wanted a bold, bright color palette that felt fun and appropriate for a bunch of girls hanging out. I envisioned a group of creative women, all in fields of design, having dinner before going out dancing. The paint swatch wall added a bold swath of color that was easy to DIY, and the geometry of the squares and rectangles reflected other geometric shapes I used throughout: a gold and copper hex pattern I painted on the wood vases, the square ceramic dishes with floating blooms, the votive holders, even a gold hex print on the tumblers. I painted the bottom half of the white ceramic bud vases copper to match the copper print on the wood vases. It’s so easy to customize inexpensive vases like these. Kelly had the idea to use extra paint swatches as a runner under the flowers. The finished table feels modern and fun, and the scale of the floral design is something anyone can achieve with flowers from the farmer’s market.”

Here’s how to create your own arrangement:

1. Allow fresh flowers at least two days to open up fully, especially the amaryllis.

2. I spray painted some of the camellia leaves copper and let them dry.

3. I begin with the larger, heavier flowers. In this case, a couple stems of amaryllis. I like to let their heavy heads rest just over the rim of the vase. I did the same with a few of the peonies; these big flowers will provide a backdrop for the more delicate sweet peas and ranunculus to float over.

4. Then, I add some of the camellia leaves for longer, leggy lines and to create a framework for the other flowers.

5. I added garden roses next, using clusters of two or three, followed by the rest of the peonies.

6. The ranunculus and sweet peas are last, adding some ‘bounce’ and looseness. If you try to implement the ranunculus too early, they get smooshed and lost among the bigger flowers. Their shape is just too epic for that!

7. Last, I adjust some of the camellia leaves for contrast among all the shades of pink.

Gal-entine Day Ideas with Flutter Magazine

I’m not super to into V-day, but I am down for any excuse to drink champagne and sit at a pretty table. Camille from Camellia Floral Design wanted to create a modern hot pink table mixed with gold and brass accents for a faux Gal-entine’s day brunch for Flutter’s blog.

I pulled organic white ceramic plates from Porch, along with wood, gold, and brass elements to go with the floral containers. While at Porch we found the perfect salt and pepper holder for the table and hexagon mercury glass candle holders that echoed the hex pattern Camille painted on the containers. Camille adhered paint chips to wall behind the table to create a little backdrop and I used the left over paint chips on the table as an runner. Pink juice plus champagne with pomegranate seeds added even more color in the most insane gold dipped glasses. At each setting I floated a gold leaf tray with one sweet pea for a further pop of color.

Entertaining: Nordic Inspired Brunch

I love me a good brunch situation and when Kim, the editor of Flutter Magazine, asked me to style a modern, Nordic, take on brunch I was wayyy on board. The amazing Ayda Robana made the most incredible spread with quick pickles (obsessed), buckwheat pancakes, frisee salad with poached eggs and pork belly (hello, yum) all paired with amazing artisanal hot chocolate by Jessica Foster Confections. Nancy Neil captured all the action perfectly and also hosted our little soiree at her amazing cabin. We shot this on my birthday and it was certainly the best way to spend it! I’m super excited to announce the latest Flutter Magazine is out online here and in PRINT out today (I will be getting my hands on a copy within the hour, check me on Instagram @kellyoshiro if you want a peek). I have two things in the magazine, a farm to table dinner shot in apple orchard (remember this backstage post?) which you can check out HERE. Shot by Nancy Neil with food by the Paper Palate (um, pumpkin tacos anyone?). Cambria Wine generously provided libations.
