Preppy Hamptons BBQ
Lifestyle InspirationThe Principles of Styling Workshop
as seen on 100 Layer Cake

kellyoshiro.com | Photo: Leo Patrone | Preppy Hampton's BBQ from the workshop The Principles of Styling

The Principles of Styling workshop is mixture of lecture and hands-on learning. In the morning I gave a lecture on the principles and talked about how to style detail shots as well as how to produce full editorials. Then, photographers put into practice what they learned at the “styling stations.” Finally, there were two sample editorials for photographers to capture. The next workshop will likely be this fall (though it can be taken in a one-on-one format too), you can visit here for more information.

For my sample editorial, I was inspired by the preppy look of the barn at Hammersky Vineyards, so I styled a chic Hampton’s inspired BBQ. First, I picked a blue and white striped linen as the jumping off point for my table. For a punch of spring color, Lavenders Flowers arranged centerpieces with daffodils, narcissus and sweet peas. In between the flowers I styled with platters of homemade mini corn muffins with honey, classic corn on the cob, pork sliders, a farmers market salad, and pitcher of lemonade. Place settings featured sleek spartan plates and classic bone flatware from The Ark. For the model, I chose an off the shoulder white blouse and cute navy blue sailor shorts from Anthropologie paired with modernist jewelry from VLM Jewelry.

A special thanks to Hammersky Vineyards for hosting us at their beautiful property and to all the vendors who contributed to the workshop! And be sure to check out the feature on a 100 Layer Cake right here.

Fashion to Table
Cover Shoot with

It was so much fun styling and producing this cover shoot for Flutter Magazine featuring taste makers, Lauren Conrad and Maura Oehm of Paper Crown. As part of Flutter’s on going fashion to table series, I had the honor of translating their personal styles into a chic wine and dessert pairing party. Photographed by the one and only Jose Villa, I scouted a stunning rose farm in Santa Ynez to serve as the backdrop for this chic shoot. Planned in about 10 days, it was a tight production schedule but thankfully it all came together.

I tapped some of my favorite local business for the desserts, including handmade chocolates truffles from Jessica Foster Confections, paired with port, homemade apple pie from Merci to Go paired with pinor noir, and petite cakes and cupcakes from Enjoy Cupcakes paired with chardonnay. See more about the cover shoot right here on Lauren’s blog and here on Flutter’s blog.

Neutral Ojai Wedding InspirationPhotos by Sally Pinera

It was so much fun working with the lovely Tory of Smith + James Events and Sally Pinera on set as a wedding stylist for this neutral Ojai wedding inspiration shoot. Tory pulled a beautiful lace dress which I paired with a Trousseau & Co hat box as an option during bridal portraits. Tory brought a ton of great dried floral elements, Silk and Willow ribbons and runners to style the wedding invitations by Plume Calligraphy. I started by folding a sheer chiffon remnant to create an ethereal, neutral background. Dried flowers and mini fall leaves were placed around the suite; I broke up the fall leaves to trail through the scene. Finally, fuzzy wisteria pods found on the property, added the perfect textural accent. For favors, Tory was envisioning little herb bundles, I used one of her vintage baskets paired with wild eucalyptus to hold the bundles which were accented with a few more dried floral elements. Tory also wanted a cheese board with accents of pear, which I plated and prepped (and ate). To go with it, I made a champagne cocktail with sliced pear garnish and served it on a classic silver tray from The Ark. You can see more of this wedding editorial on Style Me Pretty right here.

Modern Tropical Wedding InspirationPhotos by Megan Sorel
as seen on 100 Layer Cake

So excited to see this modern tropical wedding inspiration shoot featured on 100 Layer Cake. This was the editorial I styled this past November at The Principles of Styling workshop.

Inspired by the colors of the late 60’s and early 70’s the dark eggplants, orange-y reds, and deep cranberries, I wanted to create a contemporary wedding editorial that was all about color. For hair and makeup, Jess Wilcox created a reverse smoky eye which really highlighted the model’s exotic features. For the first bridal look, I pulled a fitted, short, peplum dress from Stone Fox Bride and paired it with classic gold strappy shoes from Kate Whitcomb. Modernist jewelry from VLM Jewelry added a contemporary feel to the overall look. And for her bouquet, bright reds, oranges were accented with lavender, and the cafe tones of Distant Drums. All was paired with a plethora of mustard ribbon called Oro from Tono & Co .

For the table, I wanted it to feel like a dutch still life meets the colorful 60’s and 70’s. I wanted to play with the idea of tone on tone wood, and picked a simple trestle table and benches from Barn Relic as the jumping off point. I found these insane teak, spindly, taper holders from Porch which added even more wood texture. I paired them with them face vase (isn’t she pretty?!), and simple white vases to hold the stunning flowers. To add some more moody accents, I placed rustic black platters of tropical fruit with mini pies by Lele Patisserie in between the florals and tapers. Underneath, a silk runner in peach by Tono & Co softened the overall look. For plates, The Ark‘s terra cotta plates added more color with copper napkin rings featuring velum with guest’s names for a unique place card idea by Susan Silverberg.

Special thanks to my vendors and workshop partners:

Coastal Wedding InspirationPhotos by Sally Pinera

Last fall, the lovely Sally Pinera invited me to come prop style the still life elements on her California wedding styled inspiration editorial shot in the stunning Morro Bay. For the invitations and floral details, I used a soft blue linen layered with white gauze to create a perfect seaside feeling backdrop. Sally brought great shells, loose sea salt, and amazing invitations written on capiz shells by The Little North Sea Studio. I layered the invitations and then drifted a trail of salt throughout the scene. I used the same idea, the trailing salt, at each place setting as well. For the boutonnieres by Poppy Design Co.,  I layered a piece of coral over a handmade soft blue ceramic charger from The Ark.

Campaign for The Black TuxSet Design & Prop Styling for Wedding Products

kellyoshiro.com | campaign for the black tux

I recently had the opportunity to work as prop stylist and floral designer for wedding company and the uber cool tuxedo rental company, The Black Tux. My girl Annie Cavallo, handled the bridal styling and I handled the set design for all the faux wedding elements. Above, is the couple leaving “ceremony.” I designed a moody purple, black and white bouquet for the bride and a variety of boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen. My favorite scene to prop was the cake cutting scene with a dummy cake from Lele Patisserie that I decorated with maidenhair fern and hellebore.

Valentine’s Day
Wedding InspirationPortfolio Shoot for Mon Soleil Weddings as seen on 100 Layer Cake

kellyoshiro.com | Photo: Monsoleil Weddings | Wedding Stylist for Film PHotographers

For this custom editorial for Mon Soleil Weddings, I was inspired by the concept of intersecting circles, or how two individuals, overlap and become one during the marriage ceremony. For the color story, I naturally looked to Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year, and chose the classic combination of pink and red. I added in hints of salmon, peach, and burgundy to add a little sophistication and depth to the palette. To incorporated the circle motif and the colors, Chasing Linen, the invitation designer, used circles of pink and red to symbolize the two halves of the couple. And at ceremony, I made floating floral circles with the two center circles perfectly intersecting right above the couple as they said “I do.”

For the bride’s bouquet, I couldn’t help myself, and I made it slightly heart-shaped and arranged the flowers to modulate from red to pink, left to right. And for the bride herself, it was all about that slinky, silver, Versace dress from Gossamer. Paired with traditional pearls and insane ruby drop earrings from 33 Jewels, the look was decidedly sexy. For the groom, I chose a dapper black suit by Stitch & Tie  and designed a burgundy boutonniere of chocolate cosmos and astrania.

On the table, La Tavola Linen’s luxurious light pink velvet linen provided a neutral background to pop the intense red in the flowers. I used three brushed gold trays to create a “runner” on the table to hold centerpieces, pillar candles, bud vases and loose blooms. For the floral arrangements I used red ranunculus, light pink nerine lilies, burgundy and pink orchids, upright burgundy amaranthus, calla lilies, and peach hyacinth. All were arranged in simple white, matte, pottery containers from Porch. For the menu, Chasing Linen silkscreened the text on to the actual napkins. And a subtle circle pattern on the plates and charges from Theoni Collection further drove home the circle theme.

For the wedding cake by Lele Patisserie, I made a circle topper out of simple gold wire from the hardware store. I simply wrapped the wire around a water bottle and used needle-nose pliers to twist the ends off. Then I accented the cake with more pink nerine lilies and red ranunculus.

Finally, the couple made their getaway in a chic, silver, Jaguar. You can see more of this shoot on 100 Layer Cake right here.

Large Scale Floral Arrangements
with Sarah WinwardPhotos by Braedon Flynn

kellyoshiro.com | photo: braedon flynn | floral: sarah winward

It was such an honor to collaborate with the amazing Sarah Winward for her maker editorial for Flutter Mag and Florabundance Design Days. It’s always my favorite to capture an artist at work, and Sarah is certainly that! The amazing garden of Lotusland served as our backdrop and also, as an impromptu source for floral supplies. Sarah snagged an oversized branch from the gardeners the morning of her shoot to use in her arrangement.

I pulled large urns from Elan Events Rentals and a simple round table from The Tent Merchant. Tricia Saroya lent me some of her collection of galvanized containers to hold the floral ingredients for Sarah’s arrangement. Photographer, Braedon Flynn, picked the spot, a stunning backlit location with giant Agaves on the lawn of Lotusland and it’s actually the very same spot Martha shot a cover for Living a few years ago.

From Sarah:

“I am inspired by the outdoors. I love all of the different regional flowers and foliage, and love watching them change with the season. It is the textures and color combinations that are constantly changing in nature that really ignite the passion for flowers in me.

I love that nature is wild, and unapologetic. I try to show a bit of that in my work. I like lots of different varieties in an arrangement, and I like them to have a fairly loose shape so that they look like they are still close to the garden that they came from.”

Road Trip Honeymoon
Cover ShootPhotos by Erich McVey for Flutter Magazine

kellyoshiro.com | photo: erich mcvey | flutter mag cover | honeymoon roadtrip

I love styling lifestyle editorials and this one was especially fun special since it was for a featured cover story for Flutter Magazine issue six. We photographed this shoot on location by Erich McVey in Portland and at the breathtaking, Columbia River Gorge. We started at Salt & Straw where our honeymooners enjoyed a sweet treat. Then we moved across the street to Barista, where our couple planned their route over espresso. From there, we drove out to the gorge in an immaculate, vintage, ’55 corvette.

Pre-production on this shoot was challenging. The day before, our shoot location changed based on the location of the vintage car (which we confirmed two days before the shoot day and was extremely difficult to find). I spent 4 hours the day before the shoot driving up and down the gorge looking for the perfect vista location and I found it right before sunset. Then, on shoot day, our female model changed two hours before call time. But as I always say, the more issues during pre-production, the smoother shoot day will be, and that was definitely true this time. Our model couple ended up liking each other (wink, wink) and it shows in the photos. Special thanks to Erich & Amy McVey for photographing such a fun shoot, Beth Level for hair and makeup, Toms for providing shoes & sunglasses, Tracy from Classic Vintage Rentals for props and finding the perfect vintage car, and Sophia Kaman for jewelry.

Summer Tomato Garden PartyPhotos by Jess Wilcox for Flutter Mag

I love tomatoes, and I wanted to create a garden party luncheon with a tomato-centric menu. Valerie Rice of Eat, Drink, Garden loved the concept and she created this simple menu featuring seasonal ingredients picked from her own garden.

For the table setting, this simple striped khaki linen from Porch was perfect for this casual lunch in the garden. I used potted plants as seating cards and also as a favor for guests to take home to their own gardens.
For our first course we served a simple green gazpacho for this luncheon. To make it you’ll need:
-2 lb. green zebra tomatoes
– 1 lb. lemon or persian cucumbers
– 2 lb. padron peppers
– 1 clove garlic (optional)
– 1 tbsp + 1 tsp lime juice
– 2 tsp salt
Slice peppers and remove all seeds. Rough chop tomatoes. Peel cucumbers and rough chop. Place peppers, tomatoes, cucumber  in a blender along with garlic, lime and salt and blend. Strain soup through a fine mesh strainer and discard. Refrigerate overnight. Garnish with diced lemon cucumber, sun gold cherry tomatoes and chives.
For the main course, wild salmon was wrapped and roasted in fig leaves. The fig leaves gives a coconut type aroma to the salmon. To make the salmon you’ll need:
– 4.5 oz fillets of wild salmon
– 4 fig leaves, washed and stems removed
– 1 tbsp melted butter
– 1 tsp olive oil
– salt and pepper to taste
Combine the butter and olive oil and paint fish with mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Lay fillets skin side down on the fig leaf and then wrap together with butcher’s twine. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in an oven at 400 degrees.
To finish the meal, Valerie served a Fig Fool with Lavender Honey. To make it you’ll need:
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 1 pinch sea salt
– 2 tsp confectioners sugar
– 1 tsp vanilla
-1/4 cup fromage blanc
– fresh figs
-sweet spanish flatbread or vanilla cookie
-lavender or orange blossom honey
Whip the cream with salt and combine until it forms soft peaks. Add sugar and vanilla. Fold in fromage blanc and refrigerate until ready to serve. Plate figs and dollop cream mixture, garnish with cookie or flatbread and then drizzle honey to finish.
Thanks Valerie for the great recipes and I hope you were inspired to plan your own garden to party luncheon!
