Prop Styling for FashionPhotos by John Russo for Sacoor Brothers

kellyoshiro.com | photo: John Russo Photo | los angeles prop stylist | prop stylist for fashion shoots

Prop styling for fashion shoots are always a fun experience. For Sacoor Brothers I styled a chic French-style breakfast complete with croissants, fresh OJ, french press, berries, and brie. For the other scenes, it was mostly about hand props like a classic red rose bouquet for their Valentine’s Day promo. I also pulled toys for the kids to interact with like hula hoops and kid-sized maracas. All of which served double duty to keep the kiddos entertained between scenes.

This was shot at various Santa Barbara locations including: East Beach, The Pier, The Funk Zone (Santa Barbara Surf Museum served as our faux Havana set), and a private estate in Montecito. A special thanks to John Russo for the stunning photos.

Preppy Hamptons BBQ
Lifestyle InspirationThe Principles of Styling Workshop
as seen on 100 Layer Cake

kellyoshiro.com | Photo: Leo Patrone | Preppy Hampton's BBQ from the workshop The Principles of Styling

The Principles of Styling workshop is mixture of lecture and hands-on learning. In the morning I gave a lecture on the principles and talked about how to style detail shots as well as how to produce full editorials. Then, photographers put into practice what they learned at the “styling stations.” Finally, there were two sample editorials for photographers to capture. The next workshop will likely be this fall (though it can be taken in a one-on-one format too), you can visit here for more information.

For my sample editorial, I was inspired by the preppy look of the barn at Hammersky Vineyards, so I styled a chic Hampton’s inspired BBQ. First, I picked a blue and white striped linen as the jumping off point for my table. For a punch of spring color, Lavenders Flowers arranged centerpieces with daffodils, narcissus and sweet peas. In between the flowers I styled with platters of homemade mini corn muffins with honey, classic corn on the cob, pork sliders, a farmers market salad, and pitcher of lemonade. Place settings featured sleek spartan plates and classic bone flatware from The Ark. For the model, I chose an off the shoulder white blouse and cute navy blue sailor shorts from Anthropologie paired with modernist jewelry from VLM Jewelry.

A special thanks to Hammersky Vineyards for hosting us at their beautiful property and to all the vendors who contributed to the workshop! And be sure to check out the feature on a 100 Layer Cake right here.

Prop Styling for Tabletop ProductsPhotos by Lane Dittoe for The Ark

kellyoshiro.com | photo: Lane Dittoe for The Ark | Tabletop Prop Stylist Los Angeles

Flat lay prop styling is one of my favorite genres of styling. So when my friend Kate asked me to style entertaining and lifestyle themed product shots for her fine tabletop rental company, The Ark, I was extra pumped.

Food props were my were my main focus for this shoot. When I pull food props  I look for rich color, interesting texture, and scale. In general, smaller more delicate items are easier to work that bigger items. When you’re trying to accent a product, it’s really important that the prop not draw attention away from the product. Some of my favorite props for this shoot were gorgeous purple/black beans, mini eggplants, and kale, all from my beloved Santa Barbara Farmer’s Market.

For floral accents, Kate wanted minimal, more everyday home, flowers. I pulled unique shapes like fern curls for her collection of moody black pieces and dainty scabiosa for her stunning marble plates. For backdrops, we used a mix of seamless, ceramic tiles, and these really cool suede boards I found at an art store. Lane Dittoe was on hand as our awesome product photographer and it was so much fun to work with him once again. And be sure to check out the rest of The Ark’s stunning inventory right here.

Food Editorial
with Chef Michael CimarustiPhotos by Tom Story for Coastal Living

I’m super excited to have prop styled for a food editorial with amazing Chef Michael Cimarusti for Coastal Living’s October 2017 issue. His annual party, Seafood-palooza, became the subject of this editorial, from lobster, to oysters, to gooey duck salad, it was the most delicious set I’ve ever worked on.

His wife, Crisi Echiverri, a talented pastry chef, made the delicious kumquat cake for dessert. I styled the shot with a matte black platter and a stack of organically shaped plates both from Porch, iron handled flatware from Hudson Grace and loose kumquats clipped from the couple’s garden. Food styling was handled by the lovely Yasmin Alishav who made this delicious cake look camera ready and photos were captured by Tom Story.

A Charcuterie TablePhotos by Nancy Neil
as seen on Style Me Pretty Living

I am so happy to finally share my favorite table that I’ve contributed to this year. It was very much a team styling effort with the photographer Nancy Neil pulling amazing platters and glassware from Botanik and then I added in a mix of props from my collection and Vintage Vignettes.

Shot at a private estate with its own citrus grove, I had fun running around and harvesting citrus straight from the property. I wired citrus branches to chunky wood candle holders and made “citrus trees” to add height to the table. And the amazing foodie charcuterie spread by Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama was out of this world. Post shoot, this table became lunch for the crew (roughing it I know).

Here are some tips from Ayda Robana for the perfect spread…

Charcuterie Menu Ideas:

  • Nuts: pistachios, and marcona almonds
  • Toppings: French butter, flur de sel, homemade jalipaino jelly, local wildflower honey, French radishes, cornichons, and caselvtrano green olives
  • Cheeses: hombolt fog, pecorino, petite basque, gouta, chèvre, double cream bri, stout cheddar
  • Charcuterie: prochutto di Parma, bresaola, sopressata, and chicken liver pâté
  • Dried fruits: dried white peaches, dried apple slices
  • Fresh fruits: grapes, figs if in season
  • Fresh baguette sliced thinly on the diagonal, flatbread crackers, bread sticks, rainforest crisps

Botanical Entertaining IdeasPhotography by Michelle Beller
for Flutter Magazine

I love flowers, so a flower-filled, botanical brunch was right up my alley. The amazing design center at Rolling Greens served as the location and featured this delightful, conservatory-type nook. Here, I used a 19th century table and paired it with garden benches and wicker chairs. I filled the space with a variety of plants, including jasmine, ivy topiaries, kumquat trees, and various ferns.

For food, the Kitchen made such floral delights such as strawberry and balsamic shooters with nasturtium, edible flower spring rolls, and an orange blossom cake. Of course, what’s a party without an over the top bar? From Found I styled this huge dresser and tucked in plants throughout the drawers including the most perfect violet plants. And the Kitchen made a variety of floral simple syrups, and even, floral ice cubes to pair with a classic gin fizz. You can see more of this spread in Flutter Magazine issue 16, which is on newsstands from 3/19.

Chic Pizza Party IdeasPortfolio Shoot for Jeanni Dunagan
as seen in Flutter Magazine

kellyoshiro.com | Photo: Jeanni Dunagan for Flutter Magazine | Chic Pizza Party Ideas | Prop stylist for food

It was so much fun working with Jeanni Dunagan on this lifestyle editorial for her portfolio. I came up with the idea of chic pizza party since I knew our stunning location, Sunstone Villa, has not one, but two, pizza ovens. I tapped my friend Allie Aiello to assist with the food styling and then had our friends be our guests. For an appetizer, I created a large charcuterie board on an old pizza board from Barn Relic with St. Andre brie, dried fruits and sliced salumi.

I styled a make your own pizza station with gourmet ingredients including, blanched asparagus, kale, arugula, prosciutto, roasted peppers, garlic, and kalamata olives. Then the girls made their own pizza to their liking. Wine was of course provided by Sunstone and their Pinot Noir paired perfectly with the pizza. Dinner was held al fresco in the walled garden just off the kitchen.

And even better, this portfolio shoot got picked up for print publication in Flutter!

Fashion to Table
Cover Shoot with
Lauren ConradPhotos by Jose Villa for Flutter Magazine

kellyoshiro.com | photo: jose villa | flutter mag cover shoot |Fashion to table with Lauren Conrad

It was so much fun styling and producing this cover shoot for Flutter Magazine featuring taste makers, Lauren Conrad and Maura Oehm of Paper Crown. As part of Flutter’s on going fashion to table series, I had the honor of translating their personal styles into a chic wine and dessert pairing party. Photographed by the one and only Jose Villa, I scouted a stunning rose farm in Santa Ynez to serve as the backdrop for this chic shoot. Planned in about 10 days, it was a tight production schedule but thankfully it all came together.

I tapped some of my favorite local business for the desserts, including handmade chocolates truffles from Jessica Foster Confections, paired with port, homemade apple pie from Merci to Go paired with pinor noir, and petite cakes and cupcakes from Enjoy Cupcakes paired with chardonnay. See more about the cover shoot right here on Lauren’s blog and here on Flutter’s blog.

Neutral Ojai Wedding InspirationPhotos by Sally Pinera

It was so much fun working with the lovely Tory of Smith + James Events and Sally Pinera on set as a wedding stylist for this neutral Ojai wedding inspiration shoot. Tory pulled a beautiful lace dress which I paired with a Trousseau & Co hat box as an option during bridal portraits. Tory brought a ton of great dried floral elements, Silk and Willow ribbons and runners to style the wedding invitations by Plume Calligraphy. I started by folding a sheer chiffon remnant to create an ethereal, neutral background. Dried flowers and mini fall leaves were placed around the suite; I broke up the fall leaves to trail through the scene. Finally, fuzzy wisteria pods found on the property, added the perfect textural accent. For favors, Tory was envisioning little herb bundles, I used one of her vintage baskets paired with wild eucalyptus to hold the bundles which were accented with a few more dried floral elements. Tory also wanted a cheese board with accents of pear, which I plated and prepped (and ate). To go with it, I made a champagne cocktail with sliced pear garnish and served it on a classic silver tray from The Ark. You can see more of this wedding editorial on Style Me Pretty right here.

Last fall, the lovely Sally Pinera invited me to come prop style the still life elements on her California wedding styled inspiration editorial shot in the stunning Morro Bay. For the invitations and floral details, I used a soft blue linen layered with white gauze to create a perfect seaside feeling backdrop. Sally brought great shells, loose sea salt, and amazing invitations written on capiz shells by The Little North Sea Studio. I layered the invitations and then drifted a trail of salt throughout the scene. I used the same idea, the trailing salt, at each place setting as well. For the boutonnieres by Poppy Design Co.,  I layered a piece of coral over a handmade soft blue ceramic charger from The Ark.
